APSI Session Description:
Ken Stewart, World Language Consultant to the College Board
This workshop is designed for both new and experienced AP® Spanish Language and Culture instructors and provides an in-depth look at the revised course and exam launching in the 2026–2027 school year. Participants will explore the updated Course and Exam Description (CED) and examine how the changes strengthen proficiency-based instruction through cultural inquiry, authentic resources, and performance-based assessments aligned to the three modes of communication.
A major focus of the institute will be the new research-based project, which replaces the previous cultural comparison format. Teachers will learn how to guide students through the inquiry process, support effective use of authentic sources, and help students synthesize cultural products, practices, and perspectives into a strong presentational performance.
Participants will also explore instructional strategies and classroom routines that build student success across interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational tasks. Time will be devoted to course planning, pacing, unit design, and assessment practices aligned to the new exam expectations. A segment of the workshop will be dedicated to strategies for improving students’ performance on the multiple choice section (50% of the exam) as well as interpretive strategies for the classroom.
The institute includes opportunities to explore AP® Classroom tools, including unit guides, instructional planning reports, and the AP question bank, as well as guidance for navigating the AP® Audit and syllabus development.
Teachers will leave with ready-to-use resources, practical strategies, and increased confidence to successfully implement the updated AP Spanish course.
