Meet your APSI Consultant for AP Spanish Language and Culture

María Consuelo (Chelo) Díaz Martín earned her master’s degree in English-German philology from the University of Extremadura in Spain. She has been teaching Spanish in Kentucky for more than 17 years, and currently teaches at Ryle High School (Boone County) and Northern Kentucky University.
Díaz Martín came to Kentucky through the Kentucky Department of Education’s Visiting International Teacher program. She is a College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Kentucky advocate, a table leader at AP Spanish language and culture reading, a rater of the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages, and a member of the Kentucky World Language Association.
APSI Session Description
This APSI for AP Spanish Language and Culture is designed to provide resources and classroom activities to build, supplement and develop a curriculum using authentic materials and thematic units. Topics will include the following: Developing and integrating the three modes of communication; Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational; Proficiency across modes of communication; Teaching AP® Spanish Language and Culture across themes; Teaching and developing culture in the AP Spanish Language and Culture course; 2021-2022 Support materials and Course & Exam Description for AP world languages; Using authentic resources for thematic unit design; Developing vocabulary across levels; Integrating authentic literature in the AP Spanish Language and Culture course; Using project-based learning a way to integrate and develop language skills; Applying the scoring criteria to student samples.
Topics will include the following:

review the Course Exam and Description

assess the Equity and Access statement

examine the course’s Learning Objectives and ALDs

synthesize the course themes, organizing concepts, and essential questions

differentiate between cultural products, practices, and perspectives

select and evaluate supplemental resources

preview and evaluate the practice exam

define summative and formative assessments

participate in a prepared unit of instruction to model formative and summative assessments

prepare formative and summative assessments that can be implemented immediately

participate in example lessons using the new resources

create a thematic unit or lesson for a unit

evaluate supplementary resources

reflect upon a unit of instruction

take the sections of the practice exam and evaluate the experience

select elements of the course that could be integrated into Pre-AP courses

share strategies for incorporating literature and culture into the Pre-AP courses
