Endorsed Consultant for AP Music Theory

Jane Piper Clendinning is a Professor of Music Theory at Florida State University College of Music in Tallahassee, Florida. She holds degrees in music theory from Samford University, North Texas State University, and Yale University.

She has served as a member (1998-2002) and chair (2002-2006) of the AP Music Theory Test Development Committee, as an AP reader, and on the committee that prepared the 2019 AP Music Theory Course Description. She is an active College-Board approved consultant for AP Music Theory.

Her textbooks The Musician’s Guide to Theory and Analysis (W. W. Norton, 4th ed. forthcoming 2021), The Musician’s Guide to Aural Skills (W. W. Norton, 4 th ed. forthcoming 2021), and The Musician’s Guide to the Fundamentals (W. W. Norton, 3 rd ed. 2017) were co-authored with Elizabeth West Marvin (Eastman School of Music), Paul Murphy (Muhlenberg College), and Joel Phillips (Westminster Choir College of Ryder University).

APSI Course Description for Session in AP Music Theory

During this AP Music Theory APSI, you’ll explore the course content and pedagogy and gain insight into how to understand, plan for and teach the course. You will also focus on how to assess student progress. Specific attention will be paid to the following AP Classroom resources:
  • unit guides
  • personal progress checks
  • AP teacher community
  • AP question bank
During this four-day APSI you’ll also learn about completing the digital activation process at the start of the school year, access to materials and resources, and will help ensure that your students can register for AP Exams by the new fall deadlines. An overview of the course will include
  • scope and sequence, textbooks and aural skills materials; online resources, including AP Classroom, etc.
  • strategies for
  • sight singing, melodic and harmonic dictation,
  • four-part writing,
  • melody harmonization,
  • aural and score analysis
  • course and lesson planning using the CED.
